In the past few years, it seems that the 90's are coming back. Not only is flannell apparently a big thing again, the music is also being seen/heard again.
For instance: The average high school-er ten years ago might not have known who Metallica is, but after Guitar Hero: Metallica came out, they got a boost in popularity, and made a new CD. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwsbUUEOT9g
The same can be said for AC-DC, another classic rock band. They've been coming up with stuff since the release of their Rock Band game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKQ1F9DuVsE
Another good example is The Beatles.If one was to ask any random person, "Did you listen to the Beatles before Across the Universe (Beatles themed movie) or The Beatles Rock Band?" Most of them will say no. Since the release of the Across the Universe movie, everyone's been going gaga for the Beatles again. So, what does the media do? What they seem to be doing A LOT nowadays: make a Rock Band game for it. Now even the kids who live in their basement know who the Beatles are. Paul and ringo must be getting alot of money from this, but that's not my point. Its even to the point where they recently made a "Kidz Bop" Beatles album. That's when Kids sing all the songs. Even the kids like the Beatles...
Micheal Jackson was probably the most shunned man in the media, until he died. Now the name Micheal Jackson is synonymous with mainstream radio and merchandise. Since his death, everybody listened to his music and realized "hey, he wasn't so bad after all" and no everyone feels bad. That's just an opinion, but still...
